A 2,000-YEAR-OLD CORK STOPPER RECOVERED FROM THE SEA BED PRESERVES ALL ITS PROPERTIES
The study by the Centre d’Arqueologia Subaquàtica (Underwater Archaeology Centre) and the ICSURO concludes that the cork stoppers have retained their main components (lignin, suberin and polysaccharides) and that their cell structure has remained intact despite the action of the seabed. |

Empúries, 23rd May 2012- The Archaeology Museum of Catalonia in Empúries hosted the event in which the conclusions of the study that compares today's cork stoppers with cork stoppers that are more than 2,000 years old found in underwater amphorae from the end of the 1st century BC in the Cap de Volt shipwreck in the municipal area of Port de La Selva were presented.
The event was attended by the following authorities: Antoni Baulida, the director of territorial services for the Department of Culture in Girona; Victor Puga, the temporary mayor of L’Escala; Marta Santos, the director of the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia - Empúries; Christian Serarols, the director of territorial services for the Department of Business and Employment in Girona; Manel Pretel, the director of the ICSuro; Laura Cano, a technician at ICSuro; and Gustau Vivar from the Centre d’Arqueologia Subaquàtica (CASC).
The aim of this study is to demonstrate how cork lasts over time, even in the adverse conditions of the bottom of the sea. The main components of the cork were studied, such as lignin, suberin and polysaccharides which make it elastic, compressible and the ideal material to adapt to the neck of the bottle and to preserve wines and cavas with a suitable input of oxygen. At the same time, its cell structure was analysed and it was verified that there was no significant degradation due to the action of the water.
This piece of research has allowed us to confirm the suitability of using cork stoppers to preserve the liquid that was carried in wine amphorae and that it continues to be the material par excellence for preserving wines and cavas.

HIGH SEAM'S WATER COVERED WITH CORK
It’s a proved fact that nowadays there’s a trend in crescendo of importing the most rabid mode to all the fields of action of the human being. |
| |
|
|
 |
 |
A Clear example that it appeared a few months ago on the market, of the hand of a Hollywood’s producer, is the water brand Bling H2O.
Its difference with regard to other brands it differs in the design and the bottle’s covered. This one has incrusted small Swarovski’s crystals that decorate it and besides, it’s covered by a cork stopper.
Its covered leads us to thinking about the versatility that can manage to have this material to isolate liquids of the exterior of the package, spread out beyond wines, wine cellars and others; besides the already known properties of the cork like the fact of being a natural, renewable, biodegradable and traditional material, which they make it be the best option for the covered one with bottles.
A product like is the water, with the properties of no having smell, being colorless and untasty, with a fragility at the moment of being modified, it has elected the covered one like it’s the cork stopper.
This shows us that the cork is positioned like the best covered of liquids providing a safety in the quality and distinction in the product.

The US market produces 3,762 million bottles (*2003 figures from the Wine Institute Dept. of Commerce USA) of a worldwide total of between 16,000 -18.000 million bottles of wine.
In March, the prestigious North American magazine WINE SPECTATOR held a public debate “The Great Cork Debate ” on Internet as well as in its monthly publication, with arguments in favour and against natural cork stoppers and alternative artificial stoppers.
The debate started because of two articles published in the March issue, written by the senior editor of the magazine, James Suckling defending the use of a natural, ecological product like cork, and James Laube, defending the use of other kinds of stopper.
Mr. Suckling’s arguments with regard to the pro-cork reasons were not exclusively based on environmental matters or on the ecology of the cork stopper product, which are of great importance among North American wine drinkers, but also on informing more about cork as a product and the latest production systems that include relevant qualitative elements, which have been notable for some time in the Catalan cork industry.
